چکیده

Abstract. Following the release of version 4 Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) data products from and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) mission, a new (version 4; V4) CALIPSO Imaging Radiometer (IIR) Level 2 has been developed. The IIR include cloud effective emissivities microphysical properties such as diameter ice or liquid water path estimates. Dedicated retrievals for clouds were added in V4, taking advantage high sensitivity retrieval technique to small particle sizes. This paper (Part I) describes improvements V4 algorithms compared those used 3 (V3) release, while results will be presented companion II) paper. algorithm modified improve accuracy very (close 0) large 1) emissivities. A Bayesian algorithm for the retrieval of liquid water cloud properties from microwave radiometer and millimeter radar data

[1] We present a new algorithm for retrieving optical depth and liquid water content and effective radius profiles of nonprecipitating liquid water clouds using millimeter wavelength radar reflectivity and dual-channel microwave brightness temperatures. The algorithm is based on Bayes’ theorem of conditional probability and combines prior information on cloud microphysics with the remote sensin...

Cloud liquid water profile estimation combining radar and radiometer

The combination of radar and radiometer for the retrieval of cloud liquid water profiles is investigated. As the basis for the retrievals we use a profile algorithm similar to the one proposed by Peter and Kämpfer [1], but modified on a few points. The radar is used to provide the algorithm with cloud heights and the shape of liquid water profile. Radiosondes are used to provide the water vapou...

A Comparison among Four Different Retrieval Methods for Ice-Cloud Properties Using Data from CloudSat, CALIPSO, and MODIS

The A-Train constellation of satellites provides a new capability to measure vertical cloud profiles that leads to more detailed information on ice-cloud microphysical properties than has been possible up to now. A variational radar–lidar ice-cloud retrieval algorithm (VarCloud) takes advantage of the complementary nature of the CloudSat radar and Cloud–Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Sat...

Operational Rainfall Retrieval Based on Cloud Microphysical Properties

A modular rainfall retrieval called Advective-Convective-Technique (ACT) was developed at the LCRS that is based on data from geostationary sensors in the water vapour and infrared channel. Extended regions of stratiform precipitation in the vicinity of convective cores are identified by a kmeans cluster analysis and rainrates are assigned using a 3-D cloud model. During daytime an extended ide...

Cirrus Microphysical Properties and Air Motion Statistics Using Cloud Radar Doppler Moments. Part I: Algorithm Description

The first three moments of the millimeter-wavelength radar Doppler spectrum provide valuable information regarding both cloud properties and air motion. An algorithm using these Doppler radar moments is developed to retrieve cirrus microphysical properties and the mean air vertical motion and their errors. The observed Doppler spectrum results from the convolution of a quiet-air radar reflectiv...
